Select views of Mexican Folk Art II

The Museo Franz Mayer is pleased to announce its second series of 3 conferences in English by the renowned anthropologist Marta Turok, head of the Ruth D. Lechuga Center for Folk Art Studies housed in our museum. Discover the richness, diversity and creativity present in Mexican traditional arts, through a closer look to three fascinating topics.

1.- Masks in context and art, part 2: Ruth D. Lechuga, collected, photographed and wrote about masks and dances, leaving one of the best documented mask collections in Mexico. This second talk will center on the art of mask-making, materials, characters and the evolution of this wonderful expression. (December 1, from 11:30-12:30 CST (Mexico City time)

2.- Miniatures: This talk will showcase the rich tradition of miniatures that include many materials and themes. It will also bring up the discussion on the multiple roles of miniatures as toys, in rituals, collectibles and as authorial innovation. (December 2, from 11:30-12:30 CST (Mexico City time)

3.- Rebozos: From enigmatic origins to emblematic garment: an overview of the importance this woman’s garment has had in Mexico, the various types of rebozos and the importance of understanding its complex manufacturing process as a means to appreciate and collect rebozos. (December 3, from 11:30-12:30 CST (Mexico City time)
